Wiring doesn’t last forever. Over decades, insulation can perish, connections loosen, and the system is asked to do far more than it was designed for. Here are seven signs a property may be due for a rewire. None of them proves you need one, but any of them is a good reason to get the electrics looked at.
1. Old-style cable
Cable with fabric or rubber-type insulation is a sign of very old wiring. If you can see it in the loft or at a socket, get it checked.
2. Very old sockets and switches
Round-pin sockets, brown bakelite fittings or switches that look original to a much older house often go hand in hand with older wiring behind them.
3. Fuses that keep blowing, or breakers that keep tripping
Occasional trips can have simple causes. Repeated ones suggest an overloaded or faulty circuit.
4. Scorch marks, a burning smell, or warm sockets
Stop using the socket and call an electrician. Heat is a warning that something is wrong.
5. Flickering lights or buzzing from switches
Loose connections and failing circuits can show up as lights that dim or flicker, or crackling noises.
6. Not enough sockets
If you rely on extension leads and adaptors, the installation may no longer suit how you live. That doesn’t always mean a full rewire, but it is worth discussing.
7. An EICR that says so
An EICR is the most reliable way to know. If it’s unsatisfactory, it will list what needs doing.
Full rewire or partial?
Not every problem needs a whole-house rewire. Sometimes a floor, an extension or a single circuit is enough. An inspection tells you which.
