What counts

What counts as an electrical emergency

  • No power in part or all of the property, when your neighbours still have power
  • A burning smell from a socket, switch, appliance or the fuse box
  • A breaker or RCD that keeps tripping, or will not reset
  • Scorch marks, sparks, or a socket that is hot or buzzing
  • Water that has got into sockets, lights or the consumer unit

What to do first

  • If you see flames or smoke, leave the building and call 999
  • If it is safe, switch off the affected circuit or the main switch at the consumer unit
  • Do not touch anything wet, scorched or damaged
  • Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping
  • Call Nick and tell him what has happened and where you are

Questions

Emergency electrics: common questions

For tracing a fault once the power is back, see fault finding and power restoration.

Is a tripping breaker an emergency?

It can be. A breaker that trips once may just be an overloaded circuit, but one that keeps tripping or will not reset points to a fault. Leave it off and call Nick.

Should I turn the power off?

If it is safe to reach the consumer unit and nothing is wet or damaged, switch off the affected circuit or the main switch. If you are not sure, keep clear and call.

What if my neighbours have no power either?

Then the problem is probably the supply, not your wiring. Call 105 to reach your local network operator, who deals with power cuts.
